Israeli Strikes Kill 5 People in Gaza, Medics Say, as Attacks Escalate After Ceasefire Deal
The latest round of Israeli strikes in Gaza has brought the death toll to over 1,100 Palestinians since October. Despite a ceasefire deal meant to bring an end to hostilities, Israel has instead ramped up its military operations.
In June alone, more than 40 Israeli airstrikes targeted Hamas and other militants, with a significant increase in attacks on individual militant targets. This escalation is a deliberate strategy by Israel to crack down on Hamas, as Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu faces growing domestic pressure to take a tougher stance.
The consequences for Gaza’s two million residents are dire. Living under constant threat of violence and poverty, they face a reality far from negotiated peace. The ceasefire has halted major fighting but not the near-daily Israeli strikes that have made no place in Gaza safe. As Jibril Khattab, a relative of one of the fatal victims, said, “The entire people of Gaza have not lived a single day or a single moment of ceasefire. This ceasefire is an illusion.”
This crisis is both humanitarian and a stark reminder of international efforts’ failure to bring lasting peace to the region. The 2014 Gaza War and its aftermath serve as a cautionary tale of how short-sighted diplomacy can lead to devastating consequences. Israel’s military operations have pushed Palestinians further into poverty, displacement, and desperation.
Hamas’s control over Gaza has been marked by authoritarianism and militarization, but so too must we acknowledge the Israeli responsibility for this cycle of violence. The state’s actions – or rather, inactions – have created a situation where civilians are caught in the crossfire, suffering under collective punishment.
The ACLED research group found that Israel’s surge in strikes against Hamas and other militants raises crucial questions about its security strategy. Is this a tactical shift aimed at disrupting Hamas’ infrastructure or a broader campaign to assert control over Gaza? Whatever the intention, it is clear that the consequences for civilians will be severe.
As the conflict escalates, it is essential to consider the long-term implications of this war of attrition. With nearly all of Gaza’s population living on a tiny strip of land along the coast, what does the future hold for these people? Will they be able to rebuild their lives, or will they continue to live in constant fear of being caught in the crossfire?
The answer lies not just with Israel and Hamas but also with the international community. As the region hurtles towards another cycle of violence, world leaders must take responsibility for their role in perpetuating this conflict. They must pressure both sides to return to the negotiating table, where a genuine effort can be made to address the root causes of this war.
Until then, Gaza will remain trapped in its never-ending war of attrition – a constant reminder that peace is not just an absence of violence but also a deliberate choice by those with power to create it.

The cycle of violence in Gaza is a self-perpetuating disaster, and Israel's actions are squarely at fault. The ceasefire deal has been reduced to a facade, with ongoing airstrikes making a mockery of any notion of peace. What's often overlooked is the crippling impact of Israeli restrictions on Gaza's economy, which have left two million people trapped in a perpetual state of poverty. Until these economic strangles are addressed, any diplomatic efforts will be for naught – and the international community must hold Israel accountable for its role in creating this humanitarian catastrophe.

It's high time for the international community to acknowledge that Israel's militaristic approach is not only inhumane but also counterproductive. The current policy of targeted strikes and collective punishment has merely driven Palestinians into deeper poverty and desperation. What's often overlooked is the crippling effect on Gazan infrastructure, with essential services like power and healthcare chronically underfunded due to Israeli restrictions. Until a more holistic approach is taken, addressing both security concerns and basic human needs, we can expect this cycle of violence to persist.

The Gaza Strip has become a testing ground for Israel's military might, with civilians bearing the brunt of its tactics. While Netanyahu faces domestic pressure to crack down on Hamas, the international community must consider the long-term consequences of this strategy. The Israeli government's decision to maintain a state of siege around Gaza, coupled with the near-daily strikes, is a recipe for disaster. We need to look beyond the soundbites and examine how these actions are not only perpetuating poverty and displacement but also fueling Hamas's own militarization agenda.
