The study, led by the ICMR-National Institute of Virology in Pune, analyzed over 6,800 lab-confirmed dengue samples collected between 2023 and 2025. The results showed that not only were all four serotypes present, but a significant portion of the population was exposed to multiple strains at once.
The presence of all four serotypes – DENV-1, DENV-2, DENV-3, and DENV-4 – suggests a level of hyperendemicity not seen before in India. In some areas, multiple strains are co-circulating, which could lead to more severe disease in those infected.
The data indicates that DENV-2 is the dominant strain, accounting for over half of all infections, followed by DENV-3 at 13%. However, this finding may be less relevant than the fact that multiple strains are co-circulating. This situation is not unique to areas where only two or three strains have been reported previously.
